A Pathway for the public To Prehistoric Taiwan and the Austronesian World,Rooted in Taiwan, connected to Austronesia, and reaching out to the world. The origins of the National Museum of Prehistory (NMP) can be traced back to the beginning of the new Taitung train station in 1980, which led to the discovery of the Peinan site - the most complete settlement site unearthed in the history of Taiwanese archaeology and boasting the largest cluster of slate coffin graves in Southeast Asia and the Circum-Pacific Belt. In response to calls for the preservation of the cultural heritage of this site and others, the Main Museum of the NMP was built to the south of Kangle train station. In addition, plans were drawn up to build the Peinan Site Park in the area of the Peinan Site. Also established was the Museum of Archaeology, Tainan Branch of NMP (at the Southern Taiwan Science Park in Tainan), which possesses the most complete record of the cultural layers in southwestern Taiwan.
Its exhibitions explore early human settlement, material culture, and long-term human-environment relationships, with particular emphasis on the archaeological significance of the Peinan Site. These narratives situate human history within broader temporal and environmental contexts.

Located in southern Taiwan, the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park, operated by the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Development Center, is a keysite dedicated to the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous cultures.
